FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions (and their answers!)

Which magnets are suitable for cleaning glass?

With the help of magnets, hard to get to places (e.g. aquariums, thin glass containers) can be easily cleaned. It's best to use one magnets on the inside and one on the outside. Iron can be used as an alternative counterpart as well.
You can find all our customer applications on the topic of "cleaning" here.
You need to keep the following points in mind:
  1. Thickness of the object that needs to be cleaned
  2. Scratching of the object that needs to be cleaned
  3. Rusting of magnets

1. Thickness of the object that needs to be cleaned

When you clean glass, there won't be direct contact between magnet and object. The adhesive force decreases quickly with distance. The thicker the glass of the object, the stronger the magnets need to be.
Our disc magnet S-15-08-N, for instance, only has an adhesive force of approx. 350 g at a distance of 5 mm (as opposed to 6,7 kg at direct contact).
For the adjacent project, for instance, the following magnets were used to clean a thick-walled bottle (approx. 2 mm tick):
For the inside, other magnets with an adhesive force of 1-2 kg would be suitable as well.
The following magnets were used to clean an aquarium:
To clean a triple-glazed window, one of our customers used two DEATH MAGNETS, with protection caps however (see application Window cleaning). We clearly advise against this application, because such a great distance requires extremely strong magnets, which could break your window.

2. Scratching of the object that needs to be cleaned

Despite their smooth surface, magnets can scratch glass and other surfaces. Therefore, make sure to put a handkerchief or a piece of thin cloth between magnet and surface. Due to the larger distance between the magnets, you'll need to use stronger magnets.

Rusting of magnets

Our magnets have a thin coating of Ni-Cu-Ni. When they are exposed to water and cleaning agents, however, they can begin to rust and eventually lose their magnetisation. Therefore, you need to keep in mind that you will have to replace your magnets from time to time.
